The Cambridgeshire, and formerly Huntingdonshire, village of Buckworth lies just 7 miles west of Huntingdon and enjoys open countryside, much of it given over to farmland. It covers a wide area and is part of the Hundred of Leightonstone. It was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday Book when it consisted of just 25 houses, although the head of the Manor was based at nearby Great Paxton. Today Huntingdon still has its own National Hunt racecourse, but back in the middle of the 19th century Buckworth held a race meeting on Tuesday 7th December 1847. The event was held across all grass fields owned by Mr Walker and Mr R Earle, both of whom provided open house for the occasion. The card consisted of a Match and 3 steeplechases, the feature chase being won by Mr T Wesley’s Gayhurst. |
